We all talk to ourselves. Not the mumbling-down-the-street kind of talking, but the silent-but-deadly self-talk that goes on in our heads.
Taking time to observe the hidden messages behind those words provides a peek behind the curtain, exposing self-sabotaging, programmed belief systems and subconscious fears. Once you become aware of the background stories your mind is telling you, you can take steps to replace those negative notions which shifts your reactions, your feelings and your life.
There are two types of self-talk to be aware of:
The first I call “Mind Reading,” assuming you know what someone is thinking about you with little or no evidence. Like doing a presentation, noticing someone slightly shaking their head and presuming this is a negative response. Your self-talk pipes up with Typical, I blew it; they should have had someone else present this.
Noticing that immediate negative self-talk, you are given valuable information about the subconscious beliefs running your show. Like, I never work hard enough; what I do always backfires, etc.
Another form of self-talk I label “Worst Case Scenarios,” where you default to the most terrible possible outcome. Your boss asks you to stop by her office and your self-talk immediately goes to I’m probably going to get fired. This fear-based thought could be a clue about believing you are not worthy of keeping your job, or a belief about not being good enough in general.
One of my students noticed she could never say no when someone needed help. She was constantly volunteering, ignoring her own self-care, paying the price with exhaustion and frequent illnesses. By observing her self-talk, “I have to help because no one else will,” she realized her obligation to be a rescuer was a subconscious attempt to to gain approval; trying to prove to the world that she really cared.
Doing inner work together, she discovered and released the deep roots of that false notion. She could then spend time caring about her own health. She could choose who to help and when based on her own needs, rather than needing to prove anything to anyone.
Rather than obeying the ongoing demands and bossy assertions of automatic self-talk, notice what it is saying, but know it is not the truth. Hearing those underlying messages, you will have a springboard to discover and resolve the source of those false beliefs.
Then, you will talk to yourself like someone you actually love.
