So, you’re finally in a relationship with Person Right. You just know they're The One and you’re ready to make a forever commitment.
Yet, that nagging inner voice keeps saying: What if I’m wrong? Will it end in a bitter divorce like all the other relationships I’ve seen? Maybe this is just infatuation like the last one (or five).
What's love anyway?
Love is one of those emotions that has more weird myths and false notions than possibly anything else. Actually, love is not technically an emotion – it’s more like an inner state of being.
The strict definition of love might surprise you in its simplicity: Love is acceptance.
Taking that to a Higher Consciousness level, love is acceptance without conditions. It's AKA unconditional love, a state that not many have personally experienced (at least for long).
Is love dangerous?
In our society, many of the common words used to describe love are pretty brutal sounding: Falling in love; crazy in love; head over heels in love; have a crush on; burning love; all shook up; love to death; hooked; love sick.
To name a few.
Being constantly fed these descriptions all over the place -- movies, TV, music -- can shape the way you see love. But, based on love’s strict definition -- acceptance-- they’re all inaccurate.
Definitely time to create a new love vocabulary!
Fear-based love
Your primitive, fear-based, programmed consciousness that's often in charge of how you perceive things has its own (inaccurate) way of defining love: Someone to make you feel worthy, to prove you are enough, to rescue you, to use as a tool for manipulation, to agree with you.
Often, the choices you make of who to love are subconsciously based on making statements of some kind, expressing something to others that you can’t say in words, rebelling, especially toward parents.
Also subconsciously, you may search for someone who will love those parts of yourself that you are incapable of loving, but, if they do, inevitably, you push them away in some way.
Often, love is a way to stay numb, avoid feeling the pains of existence, living in endless hope that love will fix you.
Have you noticed that it never does? Honestly, it can't.
Love is you
The most inaccurate notion of love is that others are the source of love; that someone can make you feel love.
Truth is, you are a love container, with others simply bringing out what’s inside. If there was no love already inside you, no matter how many love letters, romantic serenades, or wild weekends, there’d be no response.
Taking that further, you can only love (accept) others to the degree that you love (accept) yourself.
Tell the truth: How much do you really accept yourself, warts and all? Expecting that others do that for you is a futile dance.
The gift of love
The greatest gift love offers is holding up a mirror so you can remember who you really are, especially those parts you’ve denied, suppressed, hidden.
Is it any wonder that divorce rates are so high? No one likes seeing the truth, no less waking up with it. So, when that mirror gets too close, too real, out the door you go.
Choosing to perceive your denial that's being reflected as a gift, perhaps the most important gift you’ll ever receive, all those fierce definitions of love that had you all shook up lose their oomph.
Love sick turns into love heals; falling in love becomes rising in love; love to death becomes love to life.
As John Lennon said: Love is real.
Truly, nothing could be a better V-Day gift for YOU! ___________________________________________________________________________________________
