Do you often feel bad about yourself for no apparent reason? Do you believe you are broken or even unlovable? Are you your own worst critic, sensing that there is something terribly wrong with you?
These descriptions are blatant clues that shame, conscious or subconscious, is running your life.
All humans experience shame to some degree. You might feel it temporarily in response to a specific situation. You might be muddling through it in a more persistent way. Or, you might have a high level of shame-proneness, suffering through it broadly.
Shame is similar to guilt, but with a hopeless, uncorrectable aspect to it. Guilt is based on actions and behavior; shame goes to your core, your very existence. Guilt feels like it can be cleaned up; shame is a deep-seated negative belief affecting everything about you.
Shame gets triggered early in life through demeaning messages from parents and authority figures. It happens from physical, verbal or emotional invalidation or from being neglected, rejected or left out.
Going deeper, the most powerful sources of shame stem from pivotal life experiences when you went against your higher consciousness purpose, bought into fear and stopped being Love. During those moments you decided you were ‘bad’ and undeserving of love.
Then, you are prone to accept the shame laid on you from others because you already feel shame toward yourself.
Once you reject yourself in that way, others reflect that by rejecting you. Believing you don’t deserve love, that’s what you attract. Mirrors never lie.
Shame as a powerful teacher pointing to what you need to remember. Your shame is trying to expose subconscious denied incidents so you can resolve them. Mirrors are you BFFs if you look at them rather than blaming or running.
By taking those denied incidents out of the closet, examining and understanding them, shame can transform to compassion.
Be aware of and identify shame as it arises. Notice the negative language you use toward yourself, things you would never say to another. Shame is talking to you more often than you realize.
Shame thrives on silence and isolation. Find someone you trust and safely share about your shame. It fades with connection, especially when discovering you are not rejected. Doing this might open the door for them to share their own shame, showing that you are not alone.
Discovering and resolving the subconscious origins of shame is the key. Often those things you are beating yourself up about, when looked at through the eyes of logic, compassion and spiritual truth, are minor.
Resolving shame allows you to be unapologetically your self.
And you then feel shamelessly deserving of love.
Just by your very existence you deserve love.
