It looks like just another Wednesday, but clearly, it’s not. The global emotional cacophony ranges from concern to panic and everywhere in between.

Besides physically, this virus has spread to almost every aspect of life. The uncertainty of not knowing how long it will last, or whether you’ll be safe, sure doesn’t help.

Many have labeled this challenging moment in time the New Normal.

Although the economic impact, social restrictions and chaos is temporary, it doesn’t feel that way to your fear-based consciousness. That’s the primitive, programmed part of you that functions from keeping you safe from anything it defines as a threat. It does this by fighting, fleeing or freezing.

Needless to say, your stirred-up fear-based consciousness is having quite the field day right now.

It misses the structure of a normal routine, the predictability of your old stable life. It’s feeling powerless, disappointed, angry and victimized, desperately trying to convince you that fear is your only and best option.

What’s hiding under fear?

Granted, fear is the loudest, most insistent voice chiming in this chorus, but maybe you’re feeling something else as well. Something you haven’t put your finger on because it’s muted under the fear’s tirade.

Maybe you’re simultaneously feeling an undefinable sadness.

A constant, uncomfortable heartache for those suffering, for those who left or were left, for those anticipating the worst.

This all-too-real moment symbolizes that everything is different. Undeniably there’s individual and collective sadness about that, grieving for what was and for what potentially might be.

Plus, if you’re sensitive to external energy (which many are), you’re probably picking up on all the unacknowledged sadness floating around in the ether.

What is sadness, really?

Sadness stems from real or anticipated loss. Right now you’re faced with some of both.

Loss of security, loss of connections, loss of habits or routines (even the mundane ones like stopping for coffee on the way to work), loss of safety in the world, loss of trust in various systems – many things you used to be able to count on without thought have shifted or gone away.

Your fear-based consciousness is doing a good job convincing you that you’re not safe. You try to force the fear to be quiet, pushing it down with logic and facts to try to appease it. However, it won’t go away, persuading you with evidence that there will be inevitable losses.

Next thing you know uncontrollable tears stream down your face and you wonder why.

Sadness is fear

Keep in mind that fear is the root of all emotions.

It’s scary for your fear-based consciousness to admit when you’re afraid since that would make you appear vulnerable. Expertly, it’s mastered ways to cover fear with other emotions such as anger and sadness, believing that those are “better” (safer) options.

So, by not allowing yourself to feel fear, it quickly turns into sadness and can also morph into anger.

Recognizing this order of emotions can provide some understanding of why you’re feeling the way you do. This can give you a sense of control and can also allow those feelings to move through you faster so you feel less victimized.

What to do

Here are some suggestions to deal with the emotional level of what's going on.

- Feel whatever emotion you’re feeling and allow it to be there.

- Recognize, name and accept the emotion without judgment.

- Look deeper. See the fear that’s underneath what you’re feeling.

- Connect and express. Verbalize about it with someone who’ll listen with compassion, not invalidate, logic-away, or try to rescue you from what you’re feeling.

- Go within. Sit in stillness of some kind such as meditation, journaling, prayer or creativity, even a walk if that helps you focus inside. I can help with that.

- Assist. Find some way of helping out. Look around, there’s bound to be something you can do, even if just calling a friend or a neighbor. Remember: You’ve been training your entire life for this.

- Be open to joy. Without suppressing or denying your emotions, notice the infinite moments of beauty and joy. Perhaps you’ve been too busy to notice before.

- Be in gratitude. The lessons, the awareness, the true connection, awakening to deeper values and the wisdom are among the incredible gifts available from this time.

- Find the meaning. Once the sadness has quelled, look back and discover the gifts. What did you learn about yourself from this experience? Who are you know? Undoubtedly, you are wiser, stronger and have contributed something to someone.

Thank who you've become.
