With all the political pandemonium going on, I can safely assume you’re maybe just a tad disheveled. To put it mildly.

You try breathing slowly, chanting a few omms, reading inspirational books, reciting affirmations, zooming your therapist, or indulging in that second (third?) glass of wine after (before?) dinner (breakfast?).

But nothing helps for long. If at all.

Especially when observing two polarly-opposed men combating on stage, herding polarized followers generating their own combative stance.

As a transformational facilitator, I teach that if something pushes your buttons (yes, even these Big Political ones), it’s showing you a mirror of something you’re denying about yourself.

Mirrors show what's well hidden, reflecting something way back in your subconscious mind. But, as real mirrors do, they always reveal the truth.

Even if thou protesteth loudly.

Actually, especially if thou is protestething.

This ongoing political melee offers a fun-house full of mirrors, providing boundless opportunities for self-reflection as well as profound spiritual lessons. These particular mirrors are extra tricky to admit since they’re extremely magnified ("No way, I'm not like that!"). That just means those qualities are lurking way the heck back there.

Recently, one of my students reached out to express her emotional reaction during the recent debates. I held onto my seat as she rattled off what she felt: Frustration, irritation, depression, anger, hopelessness, incredulity. She confessed that she was actually yelling at the TV as she judged the bullying, the rudeness, the lies. It took a lot of strength for her to not fling her remote, or run out of the room in a fit of rage.

Luckily, she understood mirroring, so we took out our shovels and began to dig. Her inner discoveries revealed deep roots of issues she’s been in denial of for a very long time.

At first, it was challenging (Read: protesting, a lot) to admit that this political event could possibly be mirroring something. She prided herself on being considerate, never bullied others and was obsessively truthful.

Digging deeper, she discovered that this was a mirror about how she treats herself.

This talented, caring, bright woman was expert at self-bullying, a prolific rude self-talker, a brutal judge as to where she thought she should be at this point in her life. This inner harassing had morphed into an eating disorder, adding frosting on the cake (so to speak), giving her one more thing to beat herself up about.

By observing her button-filled negative judgements against the two men going at it on stage, she was gifted with a key that catapulted her personal evolution. She immeditately felt compassion for herself, forgiveness for her years of self-punishment.

This student also realized something else: Since humans mostly function from subconscious fear-based, programming, loud anger is just a cover up of fear.

Immediately, her heart opened and she was overflowing with compassion for these two fearful men fighting this political drama. Her button completely vanished and she was left feeling love.

That's the power and the goal of discovering mirrors -- you get to love, self and others.

Nothing is Random

Whether you know it or not, your primary “job” as a human is to evolve from fear to love. To do so, you attract, or subconsciously choose people to help you confront hidden, suppressed parts of yourself so you can admit and resolve them.

They do this by being the skilled button pushers in your life. We all have 'em.

When buttons are pushed, your denial gets shoved in your face -- simply to wake you up. If you allow yourself to.

Seeing others as doing the mirror dance with you, simply trying to help your evolution, allows you to feel love rather than victimization.

Shifting in that way can help you speak your truth from an open-hearted, accepting, connected, non-defensive place, knowing that they/we/you are just afraid.

So, if this political rollercoaster ride is upsetting, frustrating, enraging, depressing (or all of the above), rather than disengaging or tossing your remote, take a look at what’s being generously mirrored to you.

These challenging times are juicy opportunities to keep your commitment to get to The Love once and for all.

Or, maybe just have a third glass of wine?__________________________________________________________________________________________
