The term ‘self-love’ is a being bantered about everywhere these days.
But, there is a lot of misunderstanding about what self-love means. Does it mean learning various ways to be selfish? Indulging in nightly me-time bubble baths? Treating yourself to frequent shopping sprees? Eating decadent desserts without counting calories? Taking that afternoon nap? Binging on Netflix during the day?
It goes much deeper than that and is the core of what I teach. It is a basic necessity for a joyous life.
Self-love is a profound practice. Practice being the key word since it is an ongoing journey that takes as long as it takes. I call it self acceptance which is your number one aim to accomplish in life.
You may have been taught that loving yourself is self-centered, egocentric, greedy. But finding authentic self-love is as unselfish as you can be. This cliché says it all: You can only love others to the degree you love yourself.
Self-love is an experience of true compassion for yourself, forgiving the choices you made from fear and false programmed beliefs. It is embracing all parts of yourself, especially where you have judged yourself as bad or dangerous. It is accepting yourself for everything you are or are not, have done or not done.
Self-love happens by discovering who you really are. It is enhanced when you take action from knowing why you chose to be alive -- your life purpose.
Self-love is committing to things that offer inner healing and ways to empower yourself. It encourages self-care, nurturing and prioritizing your emotional and mental well-being. It is also reaching out for help and support, taking care of yourself in whatever form you need.
Self-love is not some New Age fad invented to help you feel better on days you are down. Studies prove that self-love plays a key role in experiencing physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. The lack of self-love contributes to chronic negative attitudes, anxiety and addictiveness.
Practicing self-love means being willing to be open, acknowledging your emotions, thoughts, fears and needs. Not only within yourself, but whenever appropriate, with others.
Authentic self-love means that although you accept yourself as you are, you willingly make changes that support increasing self-confidence and self-esteem. It is not about trying to please others or competing with those you compare yourself with. You don’t need approval from others to feel good about yourself.
Self-love recognizes and appreciates your strengths as well as your challenges. It identifies even small amounts of progress, finding joy in your achievements. It does not lose hope from setbacks, granting yourself permission to push through obstacles in the way of self-empowerment.
From this core sense of inner respect, you naturally veer from self-sabotaging choices and behaviors. You connect with mutually supportive relationships, allowing toxicity to be a mirror to expose your personal denial.
Self-love is a statement of celebrating this unfolding adventure called life. It is looking within and feeling immense joy, knowing what you truly deserve.
And, it is knowing that at the end of your life, you accomplished your greatest challenge: Simply loving yourself.
