When I began my inner delving, I was shocked to recognize the fierce hooks that fear had in me. Since I could boldly drive L.A. freeways, easily talk to strangers, fly without anxiety, I figured I must not be a fearful person.

I was so wrong!

I soon discovered that fear was my subconscious boss, pushing me around willfully. Everything I did, thought or felt was based on fears I knew nothing about. These fears were not about bungee cording or jumping out of airplanes. They were about subtle things -- fear of change, commitment, loss, communication, feeling and expressing emotions, even fear of love.

Shortly after I started teaching my spiritual awakening course, it was clear I had found my true Purpose with a capital P. However, I white knuckled leaving my 9-5 office job, panicked about losing the security of a weekly paycheck.

So, as it always does, the universe took over. That business closed down after not being able to make payroll. For three months.

Terrified as to how teaching could support me and my five-year-old son, the universe stepped in again. Standing in line to deposit a pile of ten-dollar checks received from a month of teaching, I was shocked that it was the exact amount that would pay my mortgage. Shocked is the key word.

Right then I realized how all-encompassing my fears were. Clearly, I needed to reshape my attitude and do something about those hidden controlling monsters.

The first step was owning my fears, admitting them to myself. That was tough since I was raised to believe that being afraid was a sign of weakness. A character flaw. An open door for others to take advantage of or tease me.

A memory flashed from working at my former office job. My desk was adjacent to a salesperson doing eight hours of cold calling every day. He had a stuttering problem that would flare up occasionally. Whenever it did, I would hear him acknowledge to the person on the other end of the call that “sometimes I stutter.” The minute he would do that, like magic, his stuttering would cease.

Testing this theory on some close friends, I started sharing my fears. It was challenging at first, but I felt fear's power immediately start to wane. It was being busted as I thumbed my nose at its false influence.

As one always wanting to understand the why of things, I surmised the source of my fears must be buried in my subconscious mind. Thus, my excavation began.

I teach that humans function from a primitive, hardwired, programmed part of our consciousness whose job is to make sure we survive. This part judges and generalizes based on false notions we decided were true prior to the age of three. There is no logic to these beliefs, and they become the puppet strings controlling us.

Delving inside, I located the origins of what was preventing me from taking this next step of teaching full time. By resolving the fears dictating the choices I was making, miracles started happening!

I was propelled to an empowered, higher consciousness mindset. Fear became a trigger pointing me toward change rather than keeping me immobilized. I threw myself headlong into whatever was scaring me.

Instead of saying I could never do that, I would sit with fear in an observational way, feel it, find its subconscious source which would resolve its impact. Then, I would take fearless action.

An ongoing question I learned to ask myself was: What’s the worst that could happen?

The answers that came were usually laughable. I learned to trust that those things I feared would probably not happen. Even if they did, I knew I could handle them. Understanding the mechanism of fear opened a world of possibility. I began living a life I never believed was possible.

My teachings evolved. I taught students how to get in touch with fear and then find and resolve where it began. They were no longer entrapped by it. Lives shifted. Joy, trust and empowerment replaced fear.

It is time to shake loose from those hooks and let fear know who's boss! YOU!
