“All I want is the truth; just gimme some truth,” John Lennon pleads during his ode to the turbulent ‘70’s. Lately, in this dizzying world flooded with so much untruth, his words are just as timely, if not more so.
Are you feeling "off" during this epidemic of lies, craving truth's refreshing relief? If you've been lied to in your life, you know how upsetting it is, generating a side-effect of betrayal, loss of trust and confusion. I'm sure you've felt that.
But, how do you discover the truth? And will it really set you free?
What's Real Truth?
Truth, in the context of the inner transformational work I do, is discovering your triggered, denied issue in an upsetting situation, and responsibly acknowledging what’s being awakened to you about yourself.
Locating this truth allows stuck issues to resolve and empowers you to unfold to your magnificence. It's a magically freeing ahhhhha.
There are two different levels of truth. I refer to one as honesty.
Here's how one of my amazing students explained the difference perfectly:
“When I squeezed into a tight parking space, I opened the door to get out of my car and accidentally hit the car that had parked way over the white line. My first reaction was to angrily blame that careless driver for parking so badly, mouthing several choice four letter descriptive words under my breath. I justified ignoring the damage I caused, thinking they deserved it!”
Even though it was true that the other car had parked incorrectly, based on her intense reaction, she knew there was something deeper to address: Something had been triggered.
Since she knew that buttons always show something that's denied or suppressed, she did a quick inner check-in. Immediately, she got in touch with her truth by observing the judgment she had on that "inconsiderate" driver.
“My reaction to this situation revealed how inconsiderate I really am. Often I don’t think about the convenience of others when I make choices. I see an extremely selfish part of myself that I've covered up really well by always acting overly considerate to others. Wow, I've been denying that truth for years!”
Understanding her mirror, she immediately cleaned up what she had done, leaving an apologetic note on the car's windshield. She took it further by committing to be truthful in another situation where she'd been angrily blaming someone for not being considerate.
By telling the mirrored Real Truth to herself, her anger dissipated instantly, and the situation (and perhaps even her ongoing pattern) got resolved.
Imagine if everyone did that.
Honesty is when you spill words that feel true in the moment, or even feel justified, but are actually a buttony reaction to not wanting to see what's being mirrored.
In other words, honesty is a desperate attempt to avoid seeing the hidden you that’s being reflected.
Why Truth is Scary
Children (and some cultures) have no concept of lying. It’s a “skill” that develops as you observe others lying, perhaps determining that it’s safer to lie. Afterall, you’re able to get away with all kinds of things by not being truthful.
Or at least it appears that way.
On a spiritual level, your Higher Consciousness functions from Truth and gets a bit pissy when you lie. Plus, karmically speaking, lies attract lies -- you can’t fool the Universe.
But many were raised with the adage ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” causing concerns about being truthful.
Keep in mind that telling the Real Truth, looking inside to take personal responsibility, has nothing to do with the other person. It’s all about you. There’s no judging or making them wrong with button-filled 'honesty.'
Locating and sharing Real Truth is healing and reconnecting, allows love to return and things to shift in amazing ways.
Yes, Real Truth will set you (and others) free.
Be the Truth in your life and see what gets mirrored!
