There are oodles of posts and personal development courses encouraging you to Find Your Authentic Self.

But, what does that really mean? Is there a diamond beneath tons of rocks just waiting to be discovered in you? A star waiting to be born? A guru waiting for a following?

This ongoing, frightening, face-to-face time with yourself is a perfect opportunity to take a deeper look at how authentic (or inauthentic) you truly are. Even behind that mask you're wearing.

What is ‘self’ anyway?

There are two aspects of self.

The first is called "fear-based consciousness."

This is your primitive mind, concerned strictly with your physical survival. It's hardwired to make sure you're safe in all outside world interactions. All. The. Time. And in some pretty odd ways for sure.

Fear-based consciousness gets programmed in various ways, from the moment you arrive, especially during events of pain or loss. During those events your fear-based consciousness makes decisions about how you have to be in order to survive.

Ultimately, what you decided about yourself becomes your Operating System. You come up with various Acts, or ways of behaving you believe will keep you safe in this scary life.

Acts are subconscious and they impact everything you do-- how you deal with people, the choices you make, who you’re attracted to and repelled by and even your profession.

Aspect #2 is your Higher Consciousness, your spirit, your essence. This is your Authentic Self, who you truly are, beyond those fear-based, programmed, determinations running your life.

This part of you functions from wisdom, truth, intuition and your Purposeful Reason to be alive. It perceives life by seeing the Big Picture, and functions from LOVE rather than fear.

Merging two aspects

An ultimate goal as a human is to merge those two parts so they can live in harmony, supporting each other, coming out to play in this physical existence together.

Even though they might be a bit of an Odd Couple, they can get along well if they learn and accept how the other functions.

Here’s an example (pardon the stereotypes!): Your fear-based consciousness loves to go to parties, drink a bit much and get wild and crazy. However, your Higher Consciousness loves to stay home alone, quietly reading, drinking herbal tea.

Once you recognize that your fear-based Act is The Wild Crazy One, believing that’s how you have to be to get attention and validation, you’re able to 1) Make other choices; 2) Go to parties anyway but be mindful of the fears causing you to do what you’re doing; 3) Go to parties, have a great time, but with different, more purified motives.

You might also discover that being in a fear-based Act at parties isn’t really bringing you joy, so you decide to stay home sipping tea and reading.

Don’t fake it!

Many spiritual paths encourage people to act-as-if, fake it until you "become" Higher Consciousness. Doing that not only doesn’t work, it's a dangerous way of suppressing yourself. Ultimately, it's just another fear-based Act and will eventually backfire in some way.

Instead, choose to be mindful of your Acts. Understand that you took them on simply because your fear-based consciousness thought they'd be your best survival tool.

Since it's difficult being in an Act with self-awareness, this mindfulness raises your authenticity level immediately.

Plus, once an Act is exposed for what it is, just fear, it often dissipates effortlessly. It's hard to go back to faking it.

Acts are just part of your evolution from fear to love. They will naturally be shed when you no longer need them.

Until then, welcome those odd couple parts of you and make them both feel genuinely at home. You'll start celebrating your authentic unique wonder-full-ness, with or without a mask.
