During my morning ritual of catching up on the news while eating my bowl of cereal, I have various reactions. They range from OMG eye-rolling, head-shaking sadness and even WTF anger.
The other day I noticed a reaction I had not fallen prey to in a long time: Shoulder-shrugging cynicism.
My mother, the ultimate cynic, modeled it well. Observing her, I took that quality on, became expert at it, believing it was my finest quality. I could out-cynic anyone.
Awakening spiritually, I discovered the mechanisms of how life works. Cynicism was replaced with an anything-is-possible attitude due to repetitious, undeniable, personal experiences. I had consistent proof that miracles do happen. Even some pretty woo-woo ones.
This new reality may have appeared Pollyanna-esque. But it was not based on blind hope, rather the grounded truth that no matter how things look, shift can always happen. Most often how I least expected.
This re-awakened cynicism interrupting my breakfast felt sinister, like things are just too screwed up to repair; nothing will ever change; people cannot to do anything right; we have not evolved in the least. My nose was upturned with an air of condescension. I felt superior to “these hopeless humans.” Since cynicism is not a comfortable attitude, nor is it my M.O., I looked deeper.
What came to me was indulging in cynicism is just another, albeit sophisticated form of fear, well camouflaged under the guise of arrogance. An attitude of I know more than you that covers up an even deeper denied notion: I really believe I know nothing.
Since part of the primitive programmed mechanism in charge of survival thrives on being right, feeling better than, never admitting to having fears, cynicism fits the bill on all accounts.
Although it might seem impossible with all that is going on in the world, you always have the freedom to look deeper at your own thoughts and attitudes. Discovering your denied beliefs can help determine how you experience things and the actions you take.
Doing that opens the door to knowing, or even considering, that possibilities are infinite. Those cynical feelings of limitations exit, and you feel empowered on every level.
Cynicism tries its best to convince that you are being “realistic” and smart. But what it does is slam the door to opportunities, choices and miracles. Ironically, since thoughts become reality, this self-enforced prison of limited thinking ends up creating what you are cynical about. Then your primitive mind gets to say see, told you so.
Your job is to notice those cynical thoughts creeping in. Allow yourself to thank them for sharing but counter them by discovering what is underneath them. Then, embrace the realm of the possible. Go beyond what is showing up. Trust the process. Choose to be the evolved love that you are.
It might seem easier to throw up your hands and fall down the bottomless chasm of cynicism, but that only provides an excuse to not take action, not do what you came here to do.
You chose to be here during these challenging times because you knew that things can transform. It might take some doing, lots of faith in humanity and in yourself, and making some uncomfortable choices, but that is what will bring the transformations we all deserve.
The power of your choices will inspire others. It will add more energy to what is possible. It will open those possibilities waiting there patiently.
So, have a nice heart-to-heart with your inner cynic, continue reading the news and enjoying your cereal. But instruct it with your grown-up voice to go play outside.
You’ve got lots of work to do.
