Today is my husband’s 64th birthday. He loves the Beatles, so I broke out into song: "Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m sixty-four?" He loved it.
Michael is quite the character. Even after a massive stroke seven years ago that wiped out his ability to retrieve words, he still makes me laugh. Even without words.
It’s a cosmic joke that this man is unable to speak since communication was the most important aspect of our relationship. If we had an issue, we would talk it through until it resolved. When he would get home late at night from work, he would share every detail about his day. He could recite so much random trivia that no one would dare challenge him at Trivial Pursuit. He explained his own spiritual theories at length, spurring me to incorporate them into my own teachings. He was my writing editor who never held back tough criticism.
Now, he is a powerful communicator without the convenience of words.
On Martin Luther King Day last week, he sensed that I was stressing. He motioned for me to sit down next to him on the couch. Protesting that I did not have time, he relentlessly pounded his fist.
Being aphasic, he knows what he wants to say but cannot find the words. Occasionally, he is able to air-write a few letters from the word, and sometimes draws pictures of what he is trying to say. But mostly, urgent sounds emerge that I must decipher.
That day, the sounds he uttered morphed into the name Martin. I put two and two together and asked if he was trying to say Martin Luther King. I was right.
Using gestures, some guttural sounds and facial expressions, he somehow got me to understand that it was a holiday, and I should give myself a break. Hugging him, I agreed.
I am reminded that communication is all about intent. My amazing man overflows with intent. It is just up to me, his wife, to translate it into words.
It was not an easy adjustment going from having a communicative husband to a silent one. But I've learned that our connection has nothing to do with words. We communicate energetically and do it well.
Now, after 36 years of marriage, I choose to use words as I promise to continue to need him and feed him, even at sixty-four.
