The other day I watched a fascinating film from 2014 called “The Giver,” staring Brenton Thwaites, Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges.
In a seemingly idyllic community of total conformity and mandatory drug-induced contentment, there were strict rules that no one dared question or break. Each person was raised to fulfill a specific role, with eighteen-year-old Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) shocked to be chosen as "The Receiver of Memories."
Sent for training with "The Giver" (Jeff Bridges), who is the sole keeper of the community's memories, he discovered the well-guarded secrets of its past.
Armed with the power of finding out the truth, combined with newly awakened emotions, Jonas realizes he must escape from this restrictive but orderly world and share what he found out. This is a challenge no one has ever successfully completed.
In one thought-provoking scene, the “Chief Elder” in charge (Meryl Streep), who knows everything about everyone, as well as the community’s hidden past, expresses the driving philosophy of this manufactured town: “If you give people choices, they will always choose the wrong thing!”
Is that true?
What is it about humans and making choices? Is creating a world where no one is allowed options the solution?
Pondering that statement inspired me to write about choices.
Life is all about making choices. To quote Sartre, “We are our choices.”
Choices are either made from fear, logic or intuition. Most often, we choose from fear, using logic to justify our choice. Repeatedly, we make choices based on what we believe we are lacking, such as approval, attention, love.
Rarely do we choose from our wise, inner knowingness, our intuition, our true wholeness. Making choices is our power.
It may seem that buying a house, getting married, having a child, changing jobs are the biggest, most important ones.
However, the more subtle ones are bigger: Choosing love over fear; being authentic; discovering and listening to our spiritual truth; manifesting our true purpose in being.
Deep inside we know the spiritually directed choices we are here to make. They are the ones we feel pulled toward before logic, fear, and guilt steps in. They stick in our mind and feel right, even if they are terrifying.
Especially if they are terrifying.
On a spiritual level, we have already chosen; the process of life is constantly trying to spur re-discovering those choices. It is up to us to be mindful, noticing and trusting what shows up and then choosing that path. It is also up to us to know that each choice we make can help us evolve to a consistent, bigger love, for ourselves and all others.
Without giving away the ending of The Giver, know that the choices "The Receiver" made were perfect.
Why?
Because he listened to his soul and chose love.
