TAIL OF A MIRACLE DOG

Updated: Mar 15

It’s been twelve years since we shared our home with a dog. Not that I didn’t want a dog, but there was lots of resistance (to put it mildly) from my other half.

Our previous dog, Sadie, was Michael's baby for ten years. Joined at the hip, she went everywhere with him. When she passed, he was beyond heartbroken. Would not even consider another dog, unwilling to go through that pain ever again. Never again.

No matter what I would say to convince him, his answer was an adamant NO! Since this response was from a man who was the biggest dog person I have ever met, I had no choice but to relent. Sadly since I have never been without a dog in my life.

I had pretty much given up the struggle to convince him, but something woo-woo happened. Woo-woo even for the queen of woo-wooness!

We were lying in bed watching our nightly dose of Stephen Colbert. Barely able to stay awake, I kept going in and out of sleep. Suddenly, my eyes flew open and there, at the edge of our bed, was a “vision” of an adorable dog complete with a pink bow in her hair! I put quotes on the word vision because she was so real, I almost reached out to pet her but I restrained myself.

To get even more woo-woo, she then said loud and clear “I'm Sadie, and I'm ready to come back to be with you both!" In English, not dog-ish!

OMG!

I leaned over to Michael and told him what I had just seen and heard. Cautiously, I asked if we could now get a dog. His answer was an immediate yes!

The next morning, I drove down the mountain to Pet Smart only to discover that they were all out of dogs to adopt. Asking an employee for recommendations, he told me to go to PetFinders.com. Sitting in my car, I looked through dozens of adoptable rescue dogs and sent out queries to four.

Then, I saw a picture of Gigi. She looked remarkably like Sadie with floppy ears. Heart pounding, I sent out an inquiry and followed up with a direct email.

The next morning, I checked my emails. No response. At 7:00 a.m. I sent another personal email to this rescue organization. Within minutes, my phone rang. It was Gigi’s foster Mom, apologizing for calling so early. I assured her that I had been up for hours.

She explained she had tried calling me several times the day before, but the number wouldn’t go through. Apparently, in my excitement, I had put an incorrect phone number in my requests!

We chatted for a while, and she invited me for a “meet-and-greet” to see if Gigi was right for us. I held back telling her that I already knew she was ours.

Two hours later, I’m in Riverside to meet my future fur baby. It took Gigi thirty minutes to stop barking at me. Then, it was as if she finally recognized me. She jumped onto my lap, snuggling like the old friends that we are.

With her foster Mom's tearful farewell, we drove off to Pet Smart to get her supplies and a bit of spoiling. When did dog food get so pricey?

Once we drove up the mountain to her new home, she gave Michael the same thirty minutes of barking. And just as suddenly, she relented, jumping on his lap. It was instant love with endless face kisses.

It took a day to discover her only “quirk” -- not wanting to go outside and get her paws wet. A difficult task living on a mountain with frequent snow. Like now. So, a virtual trip to Amazon to purchase dog boots (yes that’s a thing!) and a warm raincoat. Pink of course.

I share this story as a reminder about how the universe works. So often it takes letting go of the struggle for something to manifest. And there's that Perfect Timing of things -- I realized that it took both Michael and I this long to truly be ready to add to our family.

Then there's the pandemic. It allowed us to stop driving 3000 miles a month for Michael’s therapies. He now continues to do them all on Zoom letting us be home with this loving, snuggling, perpetually face-kissing girl.

Throughout the day, I tell Gigi that she is our angel/miracle girl. Ears twitching as she listens, I know she understands. How could she not after what she went through to be back with us?

Thank you, magical Sadie. You done good. But I sure wish you'd tolerate those adorable pink boots I got for you! Patience, Royce, patience!
