On February 1, while taking my dog for a walk in mostly melted snow, I decided to slip on a tiny piece of black ice and break my hip. That sentence may sound strange, like I chose to do something as silly as that. But being true to my teachings, I know that everything is a choice -- on some level.

Even what appears to be an accident. Especially what appears to be an accident.

Emergency surgery and twenty days of hanging out at a rehab hospital gave me lots of time to ponder why the heck I did that. Laying in the world’s most uncomfortable hospital bed, at the whim of a busy nursing staff to fulfill all my needs (I won’t get graphic), I realized how feeling helpless is beyond triggering.

Powerless. Dependent. Like a baby. All things most of us humans resist.

I couldn't quite relax into helplessness. Couldn't flip my attitude to experience this time being a pampered princess. The only exception was the every-three-day shower which I gleefully announced being wheeled down the hall as “Spa Day.” Heavenly, even though the nurse was a bit rough in a few unnamed places.

My friends who know how I am about accepting help, warned me to I allow myself to be nurtured. Take advantage of being cared for, they reminded. Relax. Enjoy because soon enough you will be back to your caregiver role. Along with a broken hip.

In my head that translated to being weak.

My can-do attitude amazed the physical therapists. Within days, I went from barely able to take a step with a death grip on a walker, to scuffling down the entire hall several times a day. Sadly, I noticed that I was one of the few patients who was motivated; many seemed to have given up.

All I kept thinking was this is not how my life is going to be.

Possibly my Biggest Lesson, a lifelong one at that, was asking for help. As you can tell, I am self-sufficient in every way. But when this happened it took a slap on the wrist from a dear friend to actually reach out to family, asking for very necessary help taking care of my disabled husband. Wonderfully, without hesitation, they stepped up and moved him in without complaint.

When a casual friend I've known since kindergarten reached out and volunteered to do anything I needed, I swallowed hard and allowed myself to squeeze out a yes. The universe could not be more blatant in its desire to support me. So, who am I to say no.

Posting my situation on Facebook brought a slew of healing energy and prayers. In fact, lying in bed trying to sleep my second night at the rehab hospital, I felt bombarded with it! How incredible!

Twenty days later, I’m home. There is no genie to grant my wish to be done with this. I am my own genie. I'm dealing with the challenges, the exhaustion and the frustration, yet knowing I will never give up.

And, there is improvement every day. In fact, I have pretty much chucked that walker!

People who have gone through this surgery as well as medical professionals all assure me that I will be as good as new. Soon. I trust what I am capable of; I trust their words.

Since part of this experience, as every experience, is getting the higher consciousness lessons, I will continue to delve.

Through this big event, I know that the universe is on my side offering lessons if I choose to see them. One thing I know for certain is that I chose this experience for some Big Reasons, big lessons and ultimately some karmic clean ups.

All are being revealed.
