On Earth Day last week, I watched a news report about a community that had decided to plant trees in a grass-filled park to help with climate change. Progress!

Living in the mountains, I am surrounded by trees. I have learned to listen to their profound, albeit silent, teachings. Trees have hidden, mysterious complexities that we are only beginning to understand.

These majestic beings survive by adapting to seasons of scarcity and plenty. They are social creatures with an underground network to share water and nutrients as well as send warning signals to each other. They emit a high frequency distress sound when undergoing environmental stress, a measurable ultrasonic scream when their stems are cut.

They teach us about healing, how they rebuild their strength after trauma. Rather than ignoring their wounds, they embark on a protective response to prevent further damage. They initiate a slow, long-term adaptation that scars over and closes off the injury, knowing that premature closure of a wound would be catastrophic.

Healing in this way leads to growth of new branches and leaves, and their gnarled scars become part of their autobiography.

This wound response offers lessons for us about recovering from trauma, a guide for our own healing.

Covering wounds too soon to keep our pain hidden leads to festering. Feeling the depth of our pain, providing it with oxygen, taking time to heal, is empowering. Attempting to rapidly return to normal provides a superficial fix, broken in the first winter storm.

Sometimes wounds are trying to lead us to an unknown path, one that allows for complete life transformation. Other times we are led to pursue further possibilities as we continue along a familiar path. Or perhaps we are meant to stand strong, trusting our resilience as the seasons change.

Real healing is the construction of deeper roots, new branches, authentic strength.

These wise tree teachers present enlightening lessons that can transform our consciousness. Hear them.
